Assigning a personal number plate to a car?
How do you assign a private number plate to a vehicle? Well, that depends on where you're starting from.......
If the registration number is on a V750 Certificate of Entitlement
You may have a
V750 Certificate of Entitlement. The certificate shows details of the cherished registration number, the 'purchaser' and possibly also a 'nominee'.
What to check:
The registered keeper (on the log book) of the vehicle that you are assigning the number plate to is the same as the person named as either the 'puchaser' or the 'nominee' (if applicable) on the V750 Certificate of Entitlement.
The expiry date on the certificate. Check it hasn't expired.
What to do next:

V750 Certificate of Entitlement

V5 / V5C Registration Document (log book)

MoT certificate (if applicable)

photocopy of tax disc
You may also need other documents (for example, DVLA form V62 if you've just bought the vehicle and it's not yet been transferred into your name). You should check with the DVLA if you are unsure.
If you want to assign the registration number to a vehicle belonging to someone not named on the certificate, the person named as the 'purchaser' will first need to apply to the DVLA to change the 'nominee' (DVLA fee applies).
If the registration number is on a V778 Retention Document
You may have a
V778 Retention Document. The document has details of the private registration number, the 'grantee' and possibly also a 'nominee'.
What to check:
The registered keeper on the V5/V5C Registration Document of the vehicle that you are assigning the number plate to is the same as the person named as either the 'grantee' or the 'nominee' (if applicable) on the V778 Retention Document.
The expiry date on the retention document. Check it hasn't expired.
What to do next:

V5 / V5C Registration Document (log book)

MoT certificate (if applicable)

photocopy of tax disc
You may also need other documents (for example, if you've just bought the vehicle and it's not yet been transferred into your name). You should check with the DVLA if you are unsure.
If you want to assign the registration number to a vehicle belonging to someone not named on the certificate, the person named as the 'grantee' must first apply to the DVLA to change the 'nominee' (DVLA fee applies).
