| The first thing you will need to consider is whether you can sell your number plate. Here's a check-list to help you >> | |
| Is your number plate on a vehicle? | |
| > | Is the vehicle registered in your name? |
| Check that the vehicle is registered in your name. Only the registered keeper of the vehicle can sell the registration number. | |
| > | Check your V5C registration document (log book) to make sure the registration number isn't marked as 'non-transferrable' |
| > | Is the MOT for your vehicle in date? |

If your MOT has expired, you may still be able to sell the registration number. How long ago did it expire? If it's less than 12 months, then you can sell the number plate. If you do not intend to renew the MOT, you would be advised to place the registration number onto a DVLA Retention Certificate.

| > | Is the tax for your vehicle in date? |

Your Retention Certificate should be renewed annually. If your number plate retention certifcate has expired, you may lose your registration number. Contact the DVLA as soon as possible. | |
| > | Check that you are entitled to sell the registration number. |
| Is the retention certificate in your name? You can only sell the registration if you are stated as the Purchaser. You cannot sell the number plate if you are stated as the 'Nominee'. | |
