No one likes to think about the possibility of their car being stolen. But it happens. And sometimes the vehicle is not recovered.

Have you thought about what happens to your personal number plate if your car is stolen?

Naturally, when your car is stolen you should inform the police. You should also inform the DVLA. And make sure you speak to your car insurance company about your personal number plate - straightaway.

If your car is stolen, you can recover your personal number plate – if the car has not been recovered after 12 months. You can apply to have your personal registration number re-assigned to your new vehicle.

There are a few criteria you must meet, to apply for the transfer:

	The police must have been notified of the theft of your vehicle
	The theft should be recorded at the DVLA for at least 12 months
	At the time of the theft, your vehicle should have had a valid MoT
	At the time of the theft, your vehicle should have current tax disc
	You should provide a letter from your insurance company, saying they have no objection to your registration number being re-issued.

You should contact the Cherished Transfers department at DVLA.
