DVLA rules for selling number plates

Can I sell my number plate?

Are you thinking of selling your number plate? Here are a few things you should know before you put your registration number up for sale...

Only the registered keeper of a vehicle can sell the number plate

If the number plate is currently on a vehicle, then it can only be sold by the person who owns the vehicle. So if you’re thinking of selling your vehicle, you should remove the registration number and place it on a number plate retention certificate before selling your vehicle.

The registration number should be transferable

Some registration numbers may be marked as ‘non-transferable’. Check your registration document (log book), before attempting to sell your number plate.

The vehicle should be licensed

If the number plate you are selling is on a vehicle, then the vehicle should be taxed. The DVLA will still consider your application if the donor vehicle is not licensed, provided the license expired less than 12 months ago, and was declared as SORN straightaway. If you applied for a tax refund, however, then you cannot sell the number plate.

The vehicle should be MOT’d

If the number plate you are selling is on a vehicle, then the vehicle should have an MOT. The DVLA may decide to inspect your vehicle, so expect to be asked to produce it at the nearest DVLA office.

You will not need an MOT if your vehicle is not old enough to be tested.

The donor vehicle should be ‘testable’

Some vehicles do not fall under the MOT testing scheme, such as tractors and electrically propelled vehicles. But they do still carry a number plate. You cannot sell a number plate from this type of vehicle.

What if I want to sell a number plate that’s on a retention certificate?

Check the retention certificate hasn’t expired. A number plate retention certificate needs to renewed every 12 months. Only the person named as the ‘grantee’ can sell a number plate. The person named as ‘nominee’ cannot sell a number plate.

What about motorbikes?

The rules are the same for selling a number plate currently on a motorbike or moped.
